Eight M’s That Shape Our Life....

Eight M’s That Shape Our Life...

Life is often shaped not by dramatic turning points but by simple principles that guide our everyday choices. Over the years, I have realised that many of these guiding forces begin with the letter M - Meditation, Mouth, Money, Mood, Moves, Mind, Morning, and Meal. Each of these eight M’s quietly influences how we think, how we act, and how we connect with the world around us.

Meditation - The wisdom of meditation is beautifully described in the Bhagavad Gita through the practice of inner discipline and self-awareness. Lord Krishna explains that a person who learns to steady the mind through meditation becomes like a lamp placed in a windless place, its flame steady and unwavering. This powerful imagery reminds us that when the mind stops wandering, clarity emerges. Meditation is not merely closing our eyes; it is learning to quieten the noise within. In today’s fast and demanding world, this inner stillness becomes essential. When we meditate, we return to ourselves, and from that calm centre we make wiser decisions, respond with patience, and live with deeper awareness.

Mouth - The mouth is a remarkable gift. It allows us to taste the flavours of life, but even more importantly, it allows us to express ourselves through speech. The words that come out of our mouth have the power to encourage someone or deeply hurt them. It is often said that words can hit harder than a hand ever can. This truth becomes even more meaningful when we witness the joy of a child speaking for the very first time. Recently, through the efforts of the JOSH Foundation, 80 children were supported with digital hearing aids. For many of them, hearing clearly for the first time opened the door to speech. When a child who once struggled with sound utters a word clearly, the joy that spreads through the family is beyond description. The child begins to feel confident, expressive, and connected to the world. It reminds us that the mouth is not merely meant for speaking, it is a powerful tool for communication, identity, and human connection.

Money is an important resource, but it is also a powerful test of character. When wealth increases, the responsibility of managing it wisely becomes even greater. Money can shape lives positively when used with humility and generosity, but it can also lead to arrogance and insensitivity if not handled with awareness. Often, people who suddenly gain wealth begin to look down upon those who are struggling or in need. True prosperity lies not in possessing wealth but in remaining grounded, respectful, and compassionate while managing it.

Mood - Our mood acts like a lens through which we view the world. When our mood is positive, even small moments bring joy and gratitude. When negativity dominates our emotions, even the best opportunities can appear burdensome. The key is not to deny difficult emotions but to learn how to manage them. Gratitude, patience, and self-awareness help us maintain emotional balance. A stable and positive mood spreads its effect not only within us but also among the people we interact with.

Moves - Life is ultimately shaped by the moves we make, the decisions that turn intention into meaningful action. Good intentions remain incomplete until they translate into steps that create real change in someone’s life. Recently, when 80 children received digital hearing aids, it marked far more than the distribution of a device. It was a move toward possibility, confidence, and belonging. For a child who has struggled to hear clearly, the world can often feel distant. But the moment sound becomes clearer, a new connection with the environment begins to form. On that day, the experience was not limited to receiving hearing aids alone. The children were also invited to participate in a painting workshop, interact with others, and enjoy both indoor and outdoor games. Through colours, play, and laughter, they began engaging with people around them more freely. These moments may appear simple, yet they play a powerful role in shaping inclusion. When children communicate, play, and express themselves alongside others, they start feeling like an integral part of society rather than standing on its margins. Sometimes the most meaningful moves are the ones that quietly help someone step forward with confidence and find their place in the world.

Mind - The mind is the command centre of our life. Our thoughts shape our beliefs, and our beliefs influence our actions. A disciplined mind can transform challenges into opportunities, while a distracted mind can magnify problems. Training the mind to stay focused, optimistic, and compassionate allows us to face life’s uncertainties with resilience. When the mind is nurtured with positivity and purpose, it becomes our greatest strength.

Morning - The way we begin our morning often determines the rhythm of the entire day. A peaceful start with gratitude, prayer, or a few moments of silence can bring clarity and calmness. Instead of rushing immediately into responsibilities, giving ourselves a few mindful minutes each morning creates balance. Our traditions beautifully remind us of the significance of a positive beginning. Festivals like Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of the new year in many parts of India, symbolise hope, renewal, and optimism. The act of raising the Gudi early in the morning reflects the spirit of welcoming new possibilities with positivity and faith. When we begin our mornings with such mindful intent, we carry that energy into everything we do throughout the day.

Meal- Food is not merely nourishment for the body, it also affects our energy and emotional well-being. Eating balanced and nutritious meals while maintaining moderation is essential for a healthy life. When we eat mindfully and with gratitude, meals become more than routine, they become an act of self-care and appreciation for the simple blessings that sustain us every day. These Eight M’s may appear simple, yet together they form a powerful guide for living a balanced and meaningful life. When meditation calms our mind, our mouth we speaks with kindness, money is handled with humility, mood remains balanced, moves are compassionate, the mind stays focused, mornings begin with gratitude, and meals nourish us thoughtfully, life begins to flow in harmony.
