Turning Pain into Purpose...

Turning Pain into Purpose...

It is said that every pain teaches us a lesson, and every lesson we learn changes us. Let us take a simple example. A child who is just learning about his or her surroundings does not know what is hot and what is cold. Unless the child touches hot water and feels the burn, he or she cannot understand the difference. Slowly, with patience, the child then touches cold water and realizes that it is safe and not dangerous. Only then does the child begin to enjoy the coolness of the water and understand the difference between hot and cold.

In a similar manner, unless we experience pain in life, we often do not understand the true purpose of our journey. Sometimes I ask the universe a question, why do we understand our purpose only when we experience pain? The answer that comes to my mind is that in this fast-moving world we have lost patience. We want everything magically and instantly, almost like robots. In this race we slowly lose the meaning of feelings and emotions, and that disconnect gradually leads us to suffering and pain.

Recently I met an elderly gentleman who had been experiencing pain in his left ear for the last three months. He had visited many doctors and was searching for the right line of treatment. Initially, he had a lot of wax in both ears, which was removed, but the pain still continued. All the scans were done, yet the reports appeared normal. Earlier he had been a very socially active person, but due to hearing loss and discomfort he had become withdrawn. In one-to-one communication he could manage to hear, so he was reluctant to use hearing aids.

What we observed was interesting. Because he was struggling to hear properly, he was unknowingly putting stress on his entire body while trying to concentrate on conversations. This constant effort was leading to headaches and fatigue, something he was not ready to believe at first.

Sometimes, due to stigma, myths, and misconceptions, we do not accept the real cause of our pain. In today’s competitive world we forget that every individual is different and our requirements are also different. After conducting a proper hearing test, we provided hearing aids according to his needs. The moment he began hearing clearly, he could reconnect with people and communicate without stress. Almost instantly his discomfort reduced significantly. Many times we fail to realize that the lack of communication with others, especially with our loved ones, can become one of the deepest pains we experience, yet we hesitate to acknowledge it.

Sometimes life reminds us of this truth through stories around us. Many cricketers of Indian origin dream of playing for India, yet due to opportunities and circumstances they move abroad and represent other countries. One such example is Monty Panesar, whose family roots are deeply connected to India but who went on to become one of England’s respected spin bowlers. Similarly, Keshav Maharaj proudly represents South Africa while carrying strong Indian heritage. Their journeys remind us that sometimes life changes our path, but passion and purpose continue to guide us forward.

A beautiful reminder of collective determination turning into a celebration was witnessed when the India national cricket team lifted the trophy at the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup on 8th March 2026. That moment of victory was not created overnight. Behind it were years of discipline, teamwork, belief, and commitment. The smiles, emotions, and pride seen on the faces of the players and fans reminded us that dedication, determination, and unity can transform pressure and challenges into unforgettable moments of joy.

Pain, therefore, is not always our enemy. Sometimes it is simply the universe’s way of slowing us down so that we can reconnect with our inner self and with the people around us. When we begin to listen patiently to what life is teaching us, pain slowly transforms into awareness and strength. If we respond with kindness, compassion, and understanding, even the most difficult experiences can guide us toward clarity, purpose, and a more meaningful life journey. "Sometimes the universe allows us to feel pain not to weaken us, but to gently guide us toward the purpose we were meant to discover."
